April’s EMusic

For some reason I can’t explain I have an extra $25 balance in my account this month. I did just roll over to a new year’s subscription, so perhaps it’s a bonus? I don’t remember buying a booster pack. Regardless, I have a big whack of downloads for the month!

EBM goodness from Tom Shear:

* “*Compass (Deluxe)* by _Assemblage 23_”:http://www.emusic.com/listen/#/album/assemblage-23/compass-deluxe/12428420/

Cevin Key doesn’t make things easy for the listener, and his Download project is probably the most inaccessible to the casual fan, even compared to the harshest of Skinny Puppy’s output, but I love it.

* “*FiXeR* by _Download_”:http://www.emusic.com/album/download/fixer/12735892/

I’ve long been a fan of “Grouper”:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grouper_%28musician%29, so when I saw a bunch of new material on EMusic, I had to grab it all.

* “*Violet Replacement | Pt.1: Rolling Gate* by _Grouper_”:http://www.emusic.com/listen/#/album/-/-/13233683/

* “*Violet Replacement | Pt. 2: SLEEP* by _Grouper_”:http://www.emusic.com/listen/#/album/-/-/13233658/

* “*Water People* by _Grouper_”:http://www.emusic.com/listen/#/album/-/-/12880602/

* “*Wide* by _Grouper_”:http://www.emusic.com/listen/#/album/-/-/13095939/

This one is a reissue of a split release between Grouper and Inca Ore:

* “*Split* by _Grouper E Inca Ore_”:http://www.emusic.com/listen/#/album/-/-/11215686/

This was recommended by EMusic, so I gave it a try:

* “*A Balloon Called Moaning* by _The Joy Formidable_”:http://www.emusic.com/listen/#/album/the-joy-formidable/a-balloon-called-moaning/11906808/

Ever since I first heard “Miranda Sex Garden”:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miranda_Sex_Garden, I’ve had a mad music-crush on Katharine Blake. Originally a Miranda Sex Garden side-project, “Mediaeval Baebes”:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mediaeval_Baebes has become Katharine Blake’s full-time project. Wonderful!

* “*Mirabilis* by _Mediaeval Baebes_”:http://www.emusic.com/listen/#/album/mediaeval-baebes/mirabilis/12202486/

I discovered “Nadja”:http://nadjaluv.ca thanks to the amazing internet radio station and blog “Strangeways Radio”:http://www.strangewaysradio.com, as part of their “shoegaze spotlight”:http://www.strangewaysradio.com/blog/2012/03/26/shoegaze-spotlight-nadja series. An absolutely awe-inspiring blend of shoegaze and drone metal, I had to grab everything I could find on EMusic. Also worth buying is their cover album, “When I See the Sun Always Shines On TV”:http://nadja.bandcamp.com/album/when-i-see-the-sun-always-shines-on-tv, particularly for the mind-blowing *Long Dark Twenties*, a re-imagining of a Paul Bellini (Kids in the Hall) song from the Brain Candy soundtrack.

* “*Belles Betes* by _Nadja_”:http://www.emusic.com/listen/#/album/-/-/12089327/

* “*Desire in Uneasiness* by _Nadja_”:http://www.emusic.com/listen/#/album/-/-/11637744/

* “*Numbness* by _Nadja_”:http://www.emusic.com/listen/#/album/-/-/12402392/

* “*Radiance of Shadows* by _Nadja_”:http://www.emusic.com/listen/#/album/-/-/11101903/

* “*Touched* by _Nadja_”:http://www.emusic.com/listen/#/album/-/-/11013061/

A couple of months ago I downloaded “*Creatures of an Hour* by _Still Corners_”:http://www.emusic.com/listen/#/album/still-corners/creatures-of-an-hour/12859106/ ; I was so impressed, I had to return for the rest.

* “*Don’t Fall In Love / Wish 7-inch* by _Still Corners_”:http://www.emusic.com/listen/#/album/-/-/12749136/

* “*Remember Pepper?* by _Still Corners_”:http://www.emusic.com/listen/#/album/-/-/12747292/

“World’s End Girlfriend”:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World%27s_End_Girlfriend makes haunting, disturbing, and ultimately beautiful music.

* “*Ending Story* by _World’s End Girlfriend_”:http://www.emusic.com/listen/#/album/worlds-end-girlfriend/ending-story/12747734/

* “*Hurtbreak Wonderland* by _World’s End Girlfriend_”:http://www.emusic.com/listen/#/album/worlds-end-girlfriend/hurtbreak-wonderland/12747658/

* “*Seven Idiots* by _World’s End Girlfriend_”:http://www.emusic.com/listen/#/album/worlds-end-girlfriend/seven-idiots/13109584/
