Does this actually surprise anyone?

Thursday, March 31st, 2005

I don’t understand how this wasn’t forseen as a consequence of biometric security – some poor accountant in Malaysia lost his finger to car thieves when they stole his fingerprint locked Mercedes S-Class.

I mean, even Demolition Man clued in to the downside of retinal scanners.

Another horrible cover.

Though not quite as soul-destroying as G4′s cover of Bohemian Rhapsody, what Jennifer Love Hewitt does to Billy Idol’s “Dancing With Myself” is an abomination. I don’t know what she got for doing this, but it should have been 10 to life.

scissorkick

Wow! Scissorkick is amazing

Quite likely the worst cover song ever recorded. Ever.

This cover of Bohemian Rhapsody by some ponces from the UK (they’re called G4 – from what I gather, they’re the “winners” of an Idol-esque contest program) is utterly horrifying. Soul-destroying even. The only thing I can say in it’s favour is that, by comparison, just about anything I can think of is pleasant.

Explosions in the Sky

Saturday, March 19th, 2005

Recently I discovered a fantastic band called Explosions in the Sky. Best compared to Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Mogwai, and Yume Bitsu, their music is magnificent grandiose space rock. Their home page doesn’t have anything up yet, but today I found a fan site that has some video and links to excellent live recordings. I’m so stoked, I had to share.

The Devil’s Dictionary – Online

Jed pointed me at the online Devil’s Dictionary. Funny!

Mind boggling. And *funny*. Can’t forget the funny.

Pulgares – The Thumbs of Fate isn’t new – in fact, I first saw it a couple of weeks ago, but for some reason I failed to link to it. It’s very strange. It’s also laugh-out-loud funny.

Another obituary, of sorts.

I’m sad to say that one of my favourite bands ever, the incomparable Curve, has disbanded. Back in 1992 or 1993, MuchMusic’s now defunct alternative show “City Limits” aired the video for Horror Head and I was an instant fan. (I also developed an instant (and likely permanent) infatuation with Toni Halliday, but that’s not relevant. ;) ) I’ve been a fan ever since. Curve split once before, after their second full-length album, Cuckoo, only to reform a few years later. Since then, they’ve released four excellent albums. Toni’s message on the Curve homepage makes me think that this time Curve is done for good. I’m sad to see them end it, but I feel lucky to have had the last four albums.

Thanks for the music, Toni and Dean, it’s meant a lot to me, and continues to do so. I wish you both the best in your future endeavours.
