New toys, new friends.

Monday, March 27th, 2006

Last Thursday I picked up a new toy – a Canon EOS 30D. This past weekend I got to really have fun with it at a photo scavenger shoot organized by the Toronto Photo Meetup Group. I’ve put a few shots up from the day on my flickr page. The event was a whole lot of fun – something just shy of a hundred people showed up, and we were split into random groups and sent exploring for photos. I met some really cool people, and did things I’d never normally do (like go up to random strangers and get the to participate in photos).

V for Vendetta

Saturday, March 25th, 2006

I saw V for Vendetta tonight and, to be honest, it wasn’t as good a movie as it should have been. The movie is less subtle, and more melodramatic by far than Alan Moore’s work, and I can understand why he hated the script.

Performances in the movie were mostly good – Stephen Fry’s being the most remarkable, with his magnificently warm and human performance as Evey Hammond’s boss and friend, Dietrich. Stephen Rea, as Chief Inspector Finch, was steady and believable. Despite limited screen time, John Hurt was totally compelling. Hugo Weaving, as V, was perhaps the hardest to get a handle on – on the one hand, he conveyed all the emotion of V through body language, and did it amazingly well. On the other hand, I could still hear him slipping, occasionally, into Agent Smith mode when he spoke (though not nearly to the extent he did as Agent Elrond of the Matrix). (Never mind that I didn’t expect V to show any emotion at all.) Natalie Portman, as Evey Hammond, gave the weakest performance of all. She had these flashes of brilliance, but not enough to keep her from seeming dull and gray. And she needs to either give up on accents or get a better voice coach. Shades of Kevin Costner – at least half the time she sounded South African. And I have to appreciate the meta-irony in casting John Hurt in the fascist dictator role. I wonder if that choice was intentional – I’d like to think so, anyway.

Visually, the film didn’t disappoint. Great night time sequences, some decent effects, and the few action scenes were shot sans close-up-handicam – a rarity in action films ever since Gladiator.

Finally, though, the Wachowskis should be complimented for making such a subversive movie, and getting it out in such wide release in a post 9/11 world. I’d never have believed such a feat possible.

Better Flickr than Flickr?

There’s been a lot of buzz about the supposed Flickr-killer Zooomr. I figured I’d see for myself what all the fuss is about and start a Zooomr page of my own.

Shoegaze ain’t dead.

Stephen and I just got back from seeing Fjord Rowboat, Madrid, and Raised by Swans at the Drake Hotel and was it ever a great time. Fjord Rowboat evokes the best of the early-90’s shoegaze scene. Gorgeous, shimmering waves of guitar just pouring into the room – it’s a sound to be experienced. Madrid are a totally new discovery for me, and a most exciting one. I’ve always loved when bands break out of specific genres – one of the reasons I love Rage Against the Machine so much was that they successfully blended metal and hip-hop to create a unique sound. In the same way, Madrid blend 70’s funk and disco with 60’s psychedelia and 90’s shoegazer to create a sound that’s entirely their own. Last, but not least, Raised by Swans evoke bands as diverse as Pinback and Sigur Rós without ever sounding derivative. Every band looked like they were having fun, the venue was terrific, and the show was really well organized (the show started an hour after the doors opened, and setup and teardown for each act was quick). I’d been looking forward to this show for weeks, and the night delivered in spades.

Juggernaut Bitch

Saturday, March 4th, 2006

I’ve been meaning to post a link to the Juggernaut Bitch video for a while now – it’s totally stupid, but it had me laughing so hard I was actually in pain.

Long silence.

Yeah, it’s been a long time since I’ve posted anything. I’d screwed up my install of WordPress on an upgrade, and I couldn’t post without using an external tool (like ecto). This meant that I’d find stuff I wanted to post, and by the time I got home, I’d forget about it. My installation is now, again, fully functional. Irregularly scheduled postings shall resume.
