Shoegaze ain’t dead.

Stephen and I just got back from seeing Fjord Rowboat, Madrid, and Raised by Swans at the Drake Hotel and was it ever a great time. Fjord Rowboat evokes the best of the early-90′s shoegaze scene. Gorgeous, shimmering waves of guitar just pouring into the room – it’s a sound to be experienced. Madrid are a totally new discovery for me, and a most exciting one. I’ve always loved when bands break out of specific genres – one of the reasons I love Rage Against the Machine so much was that they successfully blended metal and hip-hop to create a unique sound. In the same way, Madrid blend 70′s funk and disco with 60′s psychedelia and 90′s shoegazer to create a sound that’s entirely their own. Last, but not least, Raised by Swans evoke bands as diverse as Pinback and Sigur Rós without ever sounding derivative. Every band looked like they were having fun, the venue was terrific, and the show was really well organized (the show started an hour after the doors opened, and setup and teardown for each act was quick). I’d been looking forward to this show for weeks, and the night delivered in spades.
